Fitzgerald “Fitz Scandal” Fulcher
I’m not a cat person. Which I know seems odd, because I have a cat. I tend to be dramatic and deal with life in absolutes. I make statements and take stances that don’t have to be so extreme. After having my dog put down on Christmas Day 2017 due to illness, I proclaimed that I was done being a pet owner.
Then along came Greg. I was looking at pictures of animals available for adoption in the central Arkansas area. I had decided to get a cat for several reasons.
- They take themselves to the bathroom.
- Aforementioned rat infestation in “Under Construction.” No rats in the house, but I hear suspect scurrying in the attic.
- No other dog would ever be able to live up to how wonderful Fiona (my dog who was put down) was.
- Per popular opinion, cats are very selective about interaction with humans and often like to be alone.
Greg was a featured kitten on the Maumelle Animal Services site. I liked him because he was cute…..and because his name was Greg. The name was hilarious to me, and I was in desperate need of a laugh. How many cats do you know named Greg?
The description stated that “Greg is a feisty and cuddly little thing.” Okay, okay….I like feisty. I can definitely deal with feisty. This rat hunter needs to have some spunk. So I decided to meet this little fella. He was so cute ya’ll. He melted my butter just a little bit…and my heart.
Adoption day arrived, and we got to come home together. Has everyday been easy?
Nope. I knew nothing about how sharp kitten nails can become, and I have the scars on my hands and arms to prove it. He doesn’t intentionally hurt me. He’s just living life.
He has definite ideas about when meal time should commence, and he is not afraid to vocalize his opinion. He is goofy and enjoys time basking in the sun. He loves to cuddle which I wasn’t prepared for. He wraps his little paws around my leg to get my attention. He likes to pounce at me from his hiding place behind the couch, or table, or bed. He’s so much fun, and I almost missed out on him.
God is showing me not to be so dramatic and deal in such absolutes. Being more flexible and obedient is opening me up to so many awesome experiences. Let God lead and guide you. Even when you want to protect yourself from potential hurt, trust that He wouldn’t lead you to it if it was going to hurt you. Oh, and of course I changed his name. I only call him Greg when he’s acting in a way that’s unbecoming. #wepreach
