Help My Unbelief

Fasting….ugggh. I kept getting the message that I needed to fast from various sources. You can tell from the opening line of this blog that I wasn’t there yet in my thinking.

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know that I have a serious love relationship with food. I use it to celebrate, to socialize, to soothe, to comfort, and to be a companion when I’m bored. So, the thought of turning over my plate was ludicrous…until.

Until life just kept hitting. And didn’t seem to be getting any better. I was doing okay but that wasn’t good enough. I wanted more. I wanted the abundant life that the Bible speaks of. Total freedom. Total peace. I wanted all of Him.

Mark chapter 9 records the story of a man who brought his son to the disciples to be healed. His son was possessed by a demon. I can imagine the disciples proclaiming and declaring that the spirit come out in Jesus name. Much like preachers do on Sunday mornings. Y’all they couldn’t cast the spirit out!

Thankfully, Jesus arrives on the scene and asks what the problem is. The boy’s father fills Jesus in on the issue. Jesus assures the father that if he believes all things are possible. The father replies that he believes, but he needs Jesus to help any unbelief that may be in him.

Jesus heals the man’s son. The disciples pull Jesus to the side and ask Jesus why they were unable to do what He just did. Jesus informs them that prayer is good, but some things are so heavy and so weighty that they can only be removed by prayer AND fasting.

So, I turned over my plate and fasted for 21 days. I didn’t just say that I wasn’t going to eat sweets. I took my fasting life to a different level. I needed to have some heavy things lifted off of me. I needed some demons to be loosed in Jesus name. I had to have faith and continually ask God to help any areas in me that didn’t believe.

God answered me. He saw my desperation, and He answered me. Even though I had moments when I said to myself that it wasn’t going to work. Even when my favorite foods were floated in front of my face. Even when I planned to eat all kinds of stuff and then aborted the mission.

God’s hand is on my life. It’s on your life, too. There is nothing extraordinary about me that caused God to move on my behalf. He loves you just as much as He loves me. Are you willing to let His hand lead and guide you? If He tells you to turn over your plate, will you follow His instructions? If He helped my unbelief, I know He can help yours. #wepreach
